Upholding the Standards is the Way to Go for IMI-B – Dr. Garimella

As the newly launched IMI-Bhubaneswar institute starts its academic journey, Dr. Somayajulu Garimella, the director plans to lead the institute on a path of consistent growth. Dr. Garimella shared his thoughts on meeting the key challenges faced by a management institute in its nascent years.

Dr. Garimella has been the area chairman of Marketing and Chairman-MDP and Consulting Committee at IMI Delhi earlier. With his immense experience in the field of management as an award-winning academician and an industry expert both, he identified several challenges that lay ahead of him. In his view, there are several challenges associated with keeping only the best faculty, students, and administrative staff in the campus.

A noteworthy academician, Dr. Garimella earned several qualifications that reinforces his repute as one of the few management gurus in India. He completed his Ph. D in Management from the Osmania University after completing his M.B.A from the University of Texas and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the West Virginia University.
“In a highly crowded management education space, my major challenge is to attract outstanding faculty, administrative staff and students to join a new campus,” mentioned Dr. Garimella. Having said that, he also shared his plans to rely on excellent teaching fraternity IMI already is known for. “Fortunately for us at IMI-Bhubaneswar, we were able to overcome the challenge of attracting good faculty thanks largely due to the excellent reputation that IMI enjoys in the teaching fraternity and also due to availability of a large pool of well qualified management faculty in this part of the country,” He added.

Discussing about his plans to meet these challenges, Dr. Garimella intends to make sure that the IMI-B campus upholds the reputation of IMI Delhi in a long run. “To start with, we intend to follow the same pedagogy and curriculum which made the PGDM program at IMI-Delhi one of the most sought after in the country. In addition, many of my faculty colleagues from Delhi will complement the faculty members at IMI-Bhubaneswar to ensure that the standard set by Delhi campus will be replicated in Bhubaneswar campus as well,” Said Dr. Garimella.

In addition, he put emphasis on developing unique teaching methodologies by continuous practice of research and innovation. “While we strive to uphold the standards set by the Delhi campus, we will try to create unique image for the new campus by constantly innovating and introducing new courses and teaching methodologies to stay ahead of the curve,” added Dr. Garimella.

He also informed that the students of IMI-Bhubaneswar will be availing the placement opportunities along with the IMI-Delhi students. He declared that the companies visiting the IMI-Delhi campus would also be offering employment opportunities to the IMI-B students. This decision has been made in order to maximize the student satisfaction since the very first batch of the PGDM course at IIM-B.

Quality of Student Intake A Priority since the First Batch – Dr. Garimella

Renowned academician having served his excellent academic innings at IMI Delhi, Dr. Garimella joins the new IMI-B as the director. He brings with him a rich experience of over 25 years having worked in the industry as well as academics. The director of IMI-B, Dr. Somayajulu Garimella, shared some facts about the admission criteria, programme fee, and admission process for the PGDM program at IMI-B. He also shed some light on some other aspects related to the PGDM programme being conducted at the IMI’s Bhubaneswar campus.
Dr. Garimella informed that the sanctioned limit for the current year admission process for the PGDM course is going to be 60 seats. “However, we don't intend to fill up the seats unless we find students with strong academic performance in their X, XII and degree courses. Candidates with work experience of 1-3 years will be given preference,” he added indicating that only the best candidates will be offered admission. The selection of the suitable candidates will also consider their relevant work experience in addition to their CAT scores. In order to ensure the highest quality student intake, he emphasised on the importance of a rigorous admission procedure.
He also shared his delight about the fact that college has been receiving good responses from candidates with good CAT scores. “We have received good response to our call for admissions and we intend to look at the pool of candidates before deciding on the cut-off scores. But my expectation is that it will be high,” said Dr. Garimella.
He also informed about the extension in the application deadline by 10 more days due to requests from candidates for extension. As opposed to the earlier deadline of July 15, 2011, it has now been revised to July 25, 2011. Dr. Garimella also indicated that the admission process will be quick and hence, the first academic session will commence positively by the first week of August 2011.

Dr. Garimella also stated some quick facts about the programme offered by the institute, i.e. the two-year fulltime PGDM programme. The fee inclusive of the books and computer facilities for the PGDM program is Rs. 7.89 Lakh for the entire length of course (two years.) This fee also includes a refundable caution deposit of Rs. 15,000/- The food and lodging expenses for tenure of two years will be additionally charged and is estimated at approximately Rs. Two lakh.
In order to make this expenditure bearable by the deserving students, the institute has already made arrangements with financial institutions, including HDFC Bank, Credila, and Allahabad Bank. Students willing to join the PGDM programme can avail the education loan from these banks.
IMI-B, counting on its intellectual wealth inherited from IMI Delhi, now seeks the talented candidates for its first batch of PGDM. With the leadership of Dr. Garimella and expert faculty, it aims to shine in the world of academic excellence since the year of its commencement.

IMI Delhi awards 240 students with MBA diplomas at its 27th Annual Convocation

The International Management Institute (IMI), Delhi held its 27th Annual Convocation ceremony on June 4, 2011, on the Institute’s campus where 240 students belonging to the PGDM, PGDM-HR, Executive PGDM and Part-Time PGDM courses received their MBA diplomas. Dr. K. C. Chakrabarty, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India graced the occasion as Chief Guest; the event was presided over by IMI’s Director General, Padma Shri Dr. Pritam Singh. Other dignitaries who attended the impressive ceremony included Shri R.P. Goenka, Chairman Emeritus-IMI Board of Governors, Members of the IMI Board of Governors, along with faculty and staff, parents of graduating students and representatives from the media.

Delivering his address, Dr. Chakrabarty said learning is a process that goes beyond formal education. “A Convocation Ceremony symbolises the recurring moment when we are ready to begin our lives again. Indeed, there is genuine progress only in continuous learning. Learning is work; it is hard work. It engages the conscience. It builds character, strengthens morality and helps us understand humanity. Education cannot be achieved without sacrifice. And, most importantly, it is not a finite experience. In fact, the world has so many lessons to teach us and the secret of getting ahead in life is being open to these lessons, lessons from the toughest teacher of them all, that is, life itself,” he said.

Dr. Chakrabarty also enlightened the students about the challenges that lay ahead in their journey as management leaders in a changing economy. He pointed out the changes in human values with the changing times and stressed on the importance of understanding cultural differences which would help them perform effectively, particularly at the workplace, and within the industry as a whole too. “In contrast to earlier times, the management challenges in a Knowledge Economy are manifold. Wealth here is based upon the ownership of knowledge, skill and information technology. As future managers, the main lesson for you here is that managing people is getting to be more and more of a key challenge. Not only does it involve understanding the cultural differences of your colleagues, but also the task of building and managing alliances, and bringing technology enhancements into your workplaces,” he said.

In his address, Dr. Pritam Singh, the Director General of IMI, presented the annual report of activities and spoke of the performance of IMI in the academic year. Dr. Singh also shared his vision of putting IMI in the list of the top five management institutes in India. Sharing his pride about the excellent ranking that IMI has earned in various surveys, he said, “Businessworld, in their latest survey, ranked us third among the leading business schools in the domain of ‘Intellectual Capital’. The recent AIMA survey has featured IMI in the category of the 15 super league business schools. The Economic Times, in its recent survey of business schools, ranked IMI as the eighth top business school in the eyes of MBA students.” Besides sharing the Institute’s future plans, he also gave details of the eight different Centres of Excellence set up by the IMI.

The excitement and pride was clearly visible on Dr. Singh’s face as he spoke of the Institute’s exceptional placement records for 2010-11. “Our students have been able to get excellent placements, the highest and average salaries being Rs. 26 lakhs and Rs. 9.5 lakhs respectively; as compared to the highest and average salaries of Rs. 13 lakhs and Rs. 6.9 lakhs respectively, last year,” he stated.

Pledging that the highest levels of quality in terms of faculty, education, and placements at IMI would be maintained at the two newly set up campuses he said, “We have set up state-of-the-art campuses in Bhubaneswar and Kolkata to make our presence felt in Eastern India as a benchmark for top-quality management education. Both the schools have appointed Directors and a core group of the finest faculty, and offer world-class campus facilities. Our faculty from Delhi will be teaching a large number of courses at both these campuses to ensure that the IMI level of quality is not compromised. The curriculum and pedagogy will be what is in use in Delhi. All of this will help bring both the campuses very quickly to the high levels of IMI standards.  We will also provide placement support to ensure that the students on these campuses get the same opportunities as the students in Delhi get.”

Addressing the students, Shri. R.P. Goenka congratulated them on completing their education with flying colours. He said he was very confident that the new managers graduating from IMI would do the Institute proud and that a bright future lay ahead of them. “Leaving the safe confines of a business school and entering the battlefield of business is not for the weak and faint-hearted. The training you have received from the world-class faculty at IMI has made you strong and given you the courage to fight and win this war. I am sure you will be very successful and do us proud,” he stated.

Shri Goenka added that he was also very confident of a bright future for IMI under the stalwart leadership of Dr. Singh. “IMI Delhi is in a dynamic phase under the leadership provided by Dr. Pritam Singh. The Delhi campus will have additional infrastructure and faculty which will enhance the facilities and drive the area of executive training. The other focus, with increased high-quality faculty, is going to be on research. The thrust on executive training and research in addition to our current focus on excellent teaching, will transform IMI into a truly integrated business school that can be benchmarked with the best in the world,” he stated.

“We don’t teach, we facilitate learning. This is embedded in the IMI DNA. And this is what distinguishes IMI from other management institutes and will continue to do so in the future.”  Today, IMI is set to be a player in the entire knowledge cycle from knowledge creation through research to knowledge dissemination through teaching and executive training.

Kolkata and Bhubaneswar: The New Stop for Business Education by International Management Institute

International Management Institute Delhi had been rated amongst the top business schools in year 2010 after an extensive research by the Business World magazine. It stood 14th out of the many schools which were evaluated on a variety of criteria, ranging from infrastructure, career planning, faculty, academic facilities and more. A deep rooted background in management studies and a resolute corporate patronage definitely has the students making a beeline for this college. Delhi, having been an astounding success story, the same model of excellence in management studies is being replicated in Kolkata and Bhubaneswar. The graduates from these schools are all set to become sound leaders under the core values of excellence by both these branches of IMI.

Almost three decades into the field of ensuring great management studies at Delhi and the results can already be seen in these newer branches at Kolkata and Bhubaneswar. The eastern edge of India now has access to world class facilities and a credible set of faculty to promise an excellent academic environment for students with faculty from both other regions of the country and abroad.

To propagate superior leadership, IMI-K & B have chalked out its core values for all. These are transparency, passion for excellence, concern for society and environment & Integrity:  Straightforwardness and honesty. With such strong values, IMI-K & B are bound to live upto their motto - “To be one of the premier business schools in the Asia-Pacific region”

Both Kolkata and Bhubaneswar offer a PGDBM programme along with other Management Development Programmes for professionals who already have jobs but want to enhance their skills further. An AICTE approval to start Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is on its way for the institute at Bhubaneswar. Once approved and accredited by AICTE, the program will start with full zest to help the students develop their skills and acquire an in-depth knowledge of their chosen area of specialization.

Kolkata has concentrated on its international liaisons right from the beginning in order to get a solid base for consistent exposure. A joint research programme on retail has been confirmed with the Oxford Institute of Retail Management (OXIRM), which is a part of the Said Business School, Oxford University. This will give the students an edge over others and exposure to international schooling as well.  A Letter of Intent with Chartered Institute of Management Accountants), UK for knowledge sharing, has also been signed by IMI-K.

With the successful precedence of IMI-Delhi, both IMI – K and B have set themselves to a challenging curriculum, so that the students get a thorough training and are offered to the industry as trained business leaders. The placement cells and career forums are bound to gain ground and pave a path of secure jobs in future for these graduates.

Ranked 3rd in intellectual Capital, IMI starts campuses at Kolkata and Bhubaneswar

The International Management Institute (IMI) continues to add glorious milestones to its legacy of 30 years as it has been ranked third in intellectual capital among all the business schools in India. IMI is renowned as India’s first corporate sponsored B school. Sponsorships from major corporate giants, such as RPG Group, ITC, SAIL, Tata Chemicals, Nestle and many others clearly indicate the level of trust majority of companies have in IMI’s academic excellence. Accreditations and remarkable rankings of IMI by numerous professional agencies, business magazines, and other reputed management institutes testify the place of esteem IMI enjoys.

To bring the quality management education within the reach of more students from eastern regions of India, IMI introduces two new campuses at Kolkata and Bhubaneswar. These campuses are set to add new dimensions to the existing reputation of IMI to provide the quality management education. Located at the capital cities of West Bengal and Orissa, these two business schools are two new jewels in the crown of educational excellence IMI brings to the country. Despite being newer in terms of their foundation, IMI Kolkata and IMI Bhubaneswar are going to maintain the same level of quality, mentoring and academic rigour, utilizing the expertise of the same renowned faculty from IMI Delhi. IMI Bhubaneswar and IMI Kolkata will be offering PGDM programs counting on the same richest intellectual capital for which, IMI has been awarded the third rank in India.

Relying on his decades of experience and vision of seeing IMI Kolkata as a center of excellence in management education, Dr. Asish Bhattacharyya, Director, IMI Kolkata said, “IMI Kolkata shall earn global recognition as a Centre of Excellence in management education. It will produce socially sensitive, globally aware and value driven individuals, capable of providing leadership. It shall give equal importance to teaching and research, which is contextual and relevant to India. The sole objective of all the activities that the institute will undertake is to impact management practices, particularly in India and its neighbouring countries.”  In an answer to a question about the future view of IMI Kolkata, he confidently responded, “In the foreseeable future, IMI-K will emerge as the best business school in Eastern India.”

Emphasising the importance of knowledge creation and the related gaps in the education system new IMI institutes aim to bridge, IMI’s Director General Dr. Pritam Singh mentions “Everyone is talking about making India becoming a knowledge hub but that is not possible if our business schools do not start emphasizing on knowledge creation. Even if there have been creation and dissemination of knowledge in few cases, there is no application of knowledge. Most schools are not holistic or integrated which is a major issue.”

IMI aims to continue its journey of excellence with IMI Kolkata and IMI Bhubaneswar. All the distinguishing features of IMI Delhi, such as quality of education, faculty, infrastructure, corporate linkages, diversity in classrooms, financial aid and excellent placement assistance will be considered as the building blocks for the new campuses. With this strong a foundation, it doesn’t seem an overstatement that IMI’s new campuses will raise the bar of standards already set by IMI Delhi.
